Now it is official!

Did you already suspect that the military does not make any cost-benefit analyses for its operations? You are right; they do not. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed this officially to Airline Passenger Guru.

We signaled in a recent article that US crews are terrified after the Christmas Day event in a Detroit-bound plane. They already consider it threatening if a passenger fills out a comment card.

Amazingly, the military responds by launching fighter jets to escort airliners with crews grabbing jitters. We observed this is a purely US phenomenon as non-US airlines do not report similar incidents.

We raised several questions including:
- What else can a fighter jet do than escort a plane or shoot it down?
- Is there a cost-benefit analysis of the interceptions?

Brian Devonshire added a comment urging us to obtain official answers to our questions. Therefore, we contacted NORAD as they had sent up the fighter jets.

Lt. Cmdr. Gary Ross, a NORAD spokesman, says: “It would be inappropriate to assume that recent events or cost-benefit analysis have any influence on our military decision-making process.”
For additional clarification we asked whether this implies that the military does not make cost-benefit analyses. NORAD’s stunning answer is: “Yes, that is right.”

Obviously, the military does what it deems right, whatever the benefits and whatever the cost. An operation’s benefits may be zero or negative and its cost excessive, but this is not a consideration for the military.

NORAD’s answer to our questions what a fighter jet can do other than escort a plane or shoot it down. is: “The fighter jets have visuals on the plane and can provide situational awareness to responding agencies.”

This is the long answer. The short version is: “Nothing.”
